Tirana Heritage Roots

Tirana Heritage Roots is a new initiative by DMO Albania, funded by Boost Balkans. The project started on 15 October 2025 and will run until 15 October 2026.

This one-year project aims to preserve Tirana’s cultural heritage through a digital archive that will be open to the public, while also encouraging local economic growth through sustainable tourism.

Using modern technology, drone footage, Google Maps, and video storytelling, the project will document the ancient walls, ruins, and historical layers of Tirana — from antiquity to modern times. All materials will be available on the Visit Tirana portal, helping locals and visitors rediscover the city’s heritage roots.

In addition to digital documentation, the project will create five thematic itineraries through heritage sites, involving local residents and businesses. These routes will promote tourism, preserve traditions, and bring direct benefits to the community. At least 10 local businesses will be part of the initiative, contributing to new tourism products and experiences.

Why Tirana Heritage Roots?

Tirana is changing rapidly, and with that change, many traces of its past are fading.
This project was born from the need to act — because:

  • Old villas and ancient roots are disappearing.

  • Major cultural sites such as the National Museum, Tirana Mosaic, and National Art Gallery are temporarily closed.

  • There is little official promotion of Tirana’s ancient heritage.

  • Visitors have limited alternatives beyond the city center.

  • Many citizens are losing touch with the history and memories of their own city.

What the Project Will Deliver

  • Research, mapping, and documentation of heritage sites.

  • Creation of a Digital Heritage Archive for Tirana.

  • Five inclusive tourism itineraries co-created with local communities.

  • Production of high-quality digital assets (drone videos, 360° tours, photos, and audio stories) published on Visit Tirana.

  • Engagement of at least 10 local businesses in new tourism products.

  • A roundtable event with tour operators and public institutions.

  • A policy brief with recommendations for cultural heritage preservation and sustainable tourism.

  • A strong communication campaign, including continuous storytelling and updates on Visit Tirana and DMO Albania channels.

Through Tirana Heritage Roots, DMO Albania aims to raise awareness, inspire pride, and encourage action for the protection of Tirana’s unique heritage. We will also advocate for greater investment in heritage preservation and invite tour operators and guides to include these new itineraries in their offers.
