What to Do in Tirana in September 2026
Tirana, Goodbye Summer! Hello September!
September is one of the best months to discover Tirana. The intense summer heat begins to fade, the city becomes lively again, and a new cultural season is just getting started.
Whether you are visiting Tirana for the first time or you already know the city, September offers plenty of reasons to explore — from historic landmarks and museums to local food, photography, music, nature and day trips beyond the city centre. The two biggest events in Tirana this month are the National Film Festival, 14th edition, from 3-12 September 2026, and the Tirana Photo Festival, from 25-30 September 2026.
THE ALBANIAN NATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
This 14th edition marks the return of one of the most important events in Albanian cinematography and a special moment for all those who love and create film. A return made possible by the support of our partners and sponsors, who have become part of this edition. 3-12 September 2026, Universiteti i Arteve.

Tirana PHOTO FESTIVAL, 9th edition
International Tirana Photo Festival, 9th edition, the biggest event of photography in Albania, will take place from 25 – 30 September at Reja/ The Cloud Installation in Tirana. The Theme for this year is Offline, the life beyond the screen. Tirana Photo Festival is the largest photography festival in Albania. Extraordinary global changes, the replacement of thousands of jobs by artificial intelligence, the use of the phone in all vital services, has changed the way of life. People spend all their time online, not only to work but also to have fun.

Things to do
Here are some of our favourite things to do in Tirana this September.
1. Walk through the historic heart of Tirana
Start your September adventure with a walk through the centre of Tirana. Begin at Skanderbeg Square, visit the Et’hem Bey Mosque and the Clock Tower, and continue towards the House of Leaves, the National Historical Museum area and the colourful streets around Pazari i Ri. Don’t just rush from one monument to another. Stop for a coffee, watch everyday life and explore the small streets where old Tirana meets the modern city. For a deeper experience, join a guided heritage walk and discover the stories behind the buildings, streets and monuments.
2. Discover Tirana’s castles and ancient heritage
Tirana is much older than its modern appearance suggests.
Explore Tirana Castle, located in the heart of the city, and discover the archaeological traces that tell stories from different periods of Tirana’s history.
If you have more time, venture outside the city centre to discover Petrelë Castle, the ancient settlement of Persqop, or the archaeological heritage around Dajti and the surrounding villages.
September is particularly good for combining heritage with a walk in the countryside.
3. Take the cable car to Dajti
One of the easiest ways to escape the city is to take the Dajti Ekspres cable car up Mount Dajti. From the mountain, you can enjoy spectacular views over Tirana and the surrounding landscape. Have lunch, take a walk, or simply spend a few hours surrounded by nature. September’s milder temperatures make Dajti a perfect destination for a half-day escape.

4. Explore Tirana’s villages
There is another Tirana beyond the city centre. The municipality includes numerous villages and rural areas with traditions, landscapes, old houses, churches, mosques, archaeological sites and local food. Head towards Shëngjergj, Zall-Bastar, Pezë, Priskë or the area around Pëllumbas and discover a quieter side of the capital. These places are ideal for travellers looking for authentic experiences, hiking, local cuisine and encounters with communities outside the usual tourist routes.
5. Visit Pëllumbas Cave
Adventure lovers should put Pëllumbas Cave on their September list. Located in the beautiful Erzen valley, the cave is reached by a scenic hiking trail and offers an exciting combination of nature, geology and prehistoric heritage. Combine the visit with a walk through the surrounding landscape and enjoy one of the most memorable day trips from Tirana.

6. Experience Tirana’s café culture
You cannot experience Tirana without experiencing its cafés. September is the perfect time to sit outside with a coffee and watch the city come back to life after the summer holidays. Try the traditional Albanian coffee culture, discover neighbourhood cafés or explore the lively areas around Blloku, Pazari i Ri and the centre. And don’t leave without trying some traditional Albanian sweets or local food.
7. Discover Tirana through photography
September brings beautiful light to the city — perfect for photography. Look for the contrasts that make Tirana unique: Ottoman traces beside communist architecture, colourful apartment blocks, modern towers, old neighbourhoods, street art, markets and everyday life. 📷 Tirana Photo Festival 2026 will also bring photography and visual storytelling to the city later in September. Check the programme and discover exhibitions, workshops and photography activities taking place during the festival.
8. Enjoy Tirana’s parks and green spaces
When the temperatures become more comfortable, Tirana becomes a city for walking again. Take a morning walk around the Grand Park of Tirana, visit the Artificial Lake, or simply explore the city’s green spaces. For a more active experience, rent a bicycle and discover Tirana on two wheels.

9. Taste traditional Tirana
September is also a great month for food. Look beyond international restaurants and discover the flavours of traditional Tirana and Albania. Try dishes such as tavë kosi, qofte, byrek, fërgesë, seasonal vegetables, local cheeses and traditional desserts. For a more authentic experience, venture outside the centre and discover restaurants and family-run businesses serving traditional food.
10. Explore Tirana’s cultural scene
September marks the beginning of a new cultural season. Check the programme of Tirana’s theatres, galleries, cultural centres and concert venues. From contemporary art and music to theatre and exhibitions, there is usually something happening every week. For visitors interested in Albanian culture, September is an excellent opportunity to discover both contemporary creativity and the country’s living heritage.
11. Take a day trip from Tirana
If you are staying in Tirana for several days, use the city as a base for exploring the region. Depending on your interests, you can take a day trip to Krujë, explore its castle and bazaar, visit Durrës and its ancient heritage, or head towards the beautiful landscapes around Bovilla Lake. And if you prefer something less conventional, follow one of Tirana’s heritage routes and discover places that are often missed by visitors.
12. Stay a little longer
Perhaps the best advice for September is simple: Don’t rush. Tirana is a city that reveals itself slowly. Have a coffee. Walk without a plan. Talk to locals. Visit a museum. Discover an old neighbourhood. Climb a hill. Eat something you have never tried before. Because the best memories of Tirana are often found between the famous attractions.
