New DNA Study Confirms the Illyrian Origins of Albanians
A groundbreaking genetic study published in 2023 by an international team of scientists has provided the strongest scientific evidence to date that modern Albanians are direct descendants of the ancient Illyrians — one of the earliest and most enduring populations in the Balkans.
The study, titled “The Genomic History of Southeastern Europe from the Bronze Age to Present”, analyzed ancient human remains from various archaeological sites in Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, and North Macedonia. By comparing them with the genomes of present-day populations, researchers found unbroken genetic continuity in the region from the Bronze and Iron Ages to modern Albanians.
“The genetic profile of modern Albanians shows direct continuity with the Illyrian populations of the western Balkans, with minimal admixture from Slavic or other later migrations,” the study states.
This finding contradicts older, politically motivated claims that Albanians migrated into the Balkans in late antiquity. Instead, it supports what many scholars and local traditions have argued for generations: that Albanians are the indigenous people of the region, with roots stretching back over 4,000 years.
Why it matters for Tirana and Albania
Tirana sits at the heart of Illyrian territory, and archaeological discoveries in nearby areas, such as Dajt, Ndroq, and Petrelë, continue to reveal traces of Illyrian life. The National Archaeological Museum of Tirana houses key Illyrian artifacts from the Iron Age, offering visitors a tangible connection to this rich heritage.
This new study strengthens the case for preserving and promoting Albania’s Illyrian legacy — not only as a matter of national pride but also as a way to educate the world about a civilization often overshadowed by Greek and Roman narratives.
