On 9 November 1989, there is confusion at the border crossing Bornholm street in Berlin. A small dog crosses the heavily secured inner German border from East to West Germany. Through this unauthorized border crossing the dog is declared an "operative wanted case" and thus the running gag of a traditional authority logic. But that is only the beginning. Günter Schabowski, a member of the Politburo, explains at a press conference on television that all GDR citizens can apply for private travel to Western countries. That passport and visa are necessary to ignore the euphoric GDR citizens. Lieutenant Colonel Schäfer and his subordinates at the Bornholmer Straße border crossing are confronted with a large crowd that wants to pass. A night of nerve-wracking and funny negotiations finally leads to the opening of borders and thus to the beginning of German reunification.
BORNHOLMER STRASSE is a ravishingly ironic and surprisingly moving tragicomedy that takes the liberty to search for and find heroes just among the unloved border guards of the GDR. The film's script is based on the actual events of the night. This event is organised by by Goethe-Zentrum
