Valentines Day in Tirana, a day to show love or to show off?

The 14th February is a “shaking” day Tirana, a tendency that Albanians are eager to follow. Many young people have marked this day in their calendar, and generally make plans ahead. It is very controversial as it can make a day of love and surprises, or disappointment.

Tirana is a busy capital during the day and with our guide you will find the best romantic places to spend a wonderful day with your Valentine. Visit Tirana will guide about where to go and what to do  in this day. Knowing very well our city and our citizens we can say that the most preferable way to celebrate this day is a romantic night with your partner, in a quiet hotel, having a nice dinner, probably with a view or by the sea. But, remember Valentine’s Day should be a day of gratitude for the love you have and not a day to show off.

History

Valentine’s Day is something Albanians didn’t know about in communism regime. There wasn’t any special day for couples to celebrate their love. People celebrated more their wedding day anniversaries. But things changed after ’90, when the story of St Valentine became known. People start to celebrate massively as in socialist parades, and not in the right intimate way. On this day many couples took the day off and went to the Artificial Lake, staying by the lake, kissing each other and the main gift were the flowers. They are still a hit on the day.

The way of celebrating has changed though during years. Some do celebrate the love in a romantic way, in a special dinner, in a special hotel, exchanging gifts. While some others just declare that: Valentine is every other day of the year for them.
