Volunteer Day- Tirana donates

5^th of December is International Volunteer Day. This is a day to share the values of giving and helping each other, especially people in need. It is a day to give a possibility to volunteers to celebrate their efforts, to promote their work among communities and to contribute to peace and reducing the poverty.

On behalf of this Day, the Mayor of Tirana opened the month of Solidarity, which is a month not only to celebrate the Festive Season but also to help people in need. A banner reading Tirana Donates is placed in the Skanderbeg Square and besides it there were some boxes where people can put the things they don’t need and want to donate. Mr Veliaj said that there are some initiatives in this month to help others, and are included even teachers, social workers to teach kids to give and donate and help people.  He said that especially the children of poor families in Tirana will get presents for the New Year. During all this month, other boxes will be put in different places of Tirana inviting people to donate: clothes, toys for kids, blankets etc. Many of the things collected this month will be sent to the rural areas around Tirana.

In 6^th of December another activity will be held at Europa Park, next to Skanderbeg Square titled: Gift a jumper, warm a soul! where people are invited to donate the jackets they don’t need. All the jumpers collected will be distributed through the city’s trees where every person who needs, can get them. Especially homeless people can be worm in this winter. This initiative has been made before and in some other European countries and we thought we would bring it to Albania as well.
